October Date Night Ideas in the Chicago Suburbs: 4 Unforgettable Live Mentalism Shows

October is the busiest month on my calendar, and this year a big part of it is open to the public. If you are hunting for October date night ideas in the Chicago suburbs that are not another corn maze or haunted house, here are four nights where you can sit a few feet from a mentalist and watch something you will not be able to explain on the drive home.

Every night is different: a charity gala in Oak Brook, a bookstore bar in Mokena, a dinner show in Peotone, and a Halloween-week wine bar night in Tinley Park. Dates, prices, and ticket links are all below. For the always-current list, check the upcoming live magic and mentalism shows page.

1. Saturday, October 17: A Night of Magic & Possibility in Oak Brook

The dressiest of these October date night ideas. I am performing at the Casa DuPage gala at the Chicago Marriott Oak Brook, an evening built around the idea of possibility, with aura photography and tarot readings alongside the mentalism. Every ticket supports Casa DuPage and the children it serves, so if your idea of a date night includes getting dressed up and doing some good, this is the one.

If you plan fundraisers yourself, this is also a chance to see how a mentalist fits into a gala program. I wrote more about that in gala entertainment ideas for Naperville, Oak Brook and Hinsdale fundraisers.

  • When: Saturday, October 17, 6:00 PM
  • Tickets: $300 to $1,000

2. Sunday, October 18: Mentalism at Book Bar in Mokena

A Sunday evening date that still gets you home at a reasonable hour. Book Bar is shelves of books, a real bar, and a crowd that walks in already curious. This is a return visit, and it is the night I would pick for anyone who loves a good mystery novel. Your ticket includes a drink from Book Bar’s menu. Here is why bookstore mentalism nights work so well.

  • Where: Book Bar Mokena, 19060 Everett Blvd, Mokena, IL 60448
  • When: Sunday, October 18, 5:00 PM
  • Tickets: $30, includes your choice of drink

3. Saturday, October 24: Dinner & Mentalism at Fire Pit Bar & Grill in Peotone

The zero-planning option on this list of October date night ideas. One ticket covers a dinner buffet, a drink, and the show, so nobody has to pick a restaurant or race to make a curtain time. It is also the best pick for a double date or a group of friends. Dinner runs from 6:00 to 6:45 and the show from 7:00 to 8:00.

  • Where: Fire Pit Bar & Grill, 306 N Harlem Ave, Peotone, IL 60468
  • When: Saturday, October 24. Dinner 6:00 PM, show 7:00 PM
  • Tickets: $35, includes dinner buffet and one drink. 21 and over.

4. Thursday, October 29: Halloween-Week Wine, Mentalism & Magic at Sip Wine Bar in Tinley Park

Halloween week, a glass of wine, and an hour of mind reading. If you want a spooky-season date night in Tinley Park without the fake blood, come early for Sip’s food and wine list, then settle in for a one-hour interactive show that mixes mentalism with close-up sleight of hand. At $20 it is the best value of the month. More on why wine bars and mentalism go together.

  • Where: Sip Wine Bar, 17424 Oak Park Ave, Tinley Park, IL 60477
  • When: Thursday, October 29, 7:00 PM
  • Tickets: $20. 21 and over.

Why a Mentalism Show Is One of the Best October Date Night Ideas

  • You leave with something to talk about. Dinner and a movie ends when the credits roll. A mentalism show keeps the argument going the whole ride home: how did he know that?
  • It is interactive, but only as much as you want. Some people love being the volunteer. Others would rather watch their date squirm. Both work.
  • The rooms are small. Bookstores, wine bars, and restaurants put you close to the action, not in row 40 of a theater.
  • It is built for adults. No balloon animals, no rabbits, and no claims of psychic powers. It is psychology, suggestion, and a lot of rehearsal. Here is the difference between a psychic entertainer and a mentalist.

Date Night Tips

  • Buy ahead. Seating is limited at every venue, and fall weekends fill fast.
  • Order together. One order keeps your group seated together.
  • Arrive early. Every venue serves food and drinks before the show, and the best seats go first.
  • Check the age limit. The Peotone and Tinley Park shows are 21 and over. Each listing says.

And if you catch me on WGN’s Spotlight Chicago on October 16, these are the shows I will be talking about.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some unique October date night ideas in the Chicago suburbs?

Beyond pumpkin patches and haunted houses, a live mentalism show is one of the more unusual options. This October there are public shows in Oak Brook, Mokena, Peotone, and Tinley Park, each paired with drinks, dinner, or a gala evening.

How much are tickets?

The venue shows run $20 to $35, and the Mokena and Peotone tickets include a drink (Peotone also includes a dinner buffet). The Casa DuPage gala in Oak Brook is $300 to $1,000.

How long is the show?

About an hour. Plan extra time before the show for food and drinks at the venue.

Can I see the full schedule?

Yes. New dates go up on the upcoming shows page first, and my guide to live mentalism shows in the Chicago suburbs explains what to expect at each type of venue. You can also see photos from past shows.

Can I book a private show instead?

Absolutely. A lot of people see a public show first and then book one for a private party, corporate event, or wedding. Check availability for your date and I will respond within 24 hours.
